I am going to flip my opinion when talking about another one of my favorite trees, the European beech ( Fagus sylvatica). I also gave some suggested green leaf varieties. I made the argument that green leaf Japanese maples fit into landscapes better than their purple leafed cousins. Yeah even though it’s not a native tree and I have bad mouthed Purple leaf Japanese maples in a past post. The crape myrtle also has the advantage of blooming all summer long, from June through September.Today, I am, going to recommend you consider an odd specimen tree, the Purple fountain beech. It grows light pink flower clusters that are very attractive. We like the crape myrtle ‘Delta Blush’ ( Lagerstroemia indica ‘Delta Blush’. ‘Lavender twist’ redbud also impresses with its twisted trunk and branches.Ĭrape myrtle is another popular choice. Check out ‘Lavender Twist’, another small weeping Eastern redbud with some of the same attributes as ‘Ruby Falls’ but decked out in spring with purple flowers.
